Edwards and O'Neil represent the early candidates in the frame to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend following the team's 10-match without a victory start to the top-flight campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have previous associations to the club - are part of the options to be considered by the club leadership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton manager - who played more than 100 of games for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a leading contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the club board as they start the search of hiring a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a surprising choice given he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
